Want to Make a Lot of Money? Design Video Ads.

Imagine yourself as a broke, amateur graphic designer pinching pennies just to get by. You're sitting in Starbucks drinking a $7 coffee while browsing the internet on your $1500 MacBook. If only you had the money to afford the things you really want…Well, now you can!

The advertising and marketing industries are in desperate need for video ad creators. And before you ask, no, this is not a paid promotion. However, studies have shown time and time again that social media users greatly prefer video ads compared to static image ads. On Instagram, organic video content receives 38% more engagement than images. If that’s not enough to convince you, Lemonlight reported 93% of businesses gained a new customer as a direct result of posting on social media. Oh, and video ads specialists nationally average at $88,000 per year.

As graphic designers, we must be cognizant of adapting to marketing trends. With the decreasing circulation of printed materials like newspapers and magazines, image-heavy digital content is the future of business, marketing, and graphic design. Apps like TikTok have shown the effectiveness of quick, video content. People no longer want long videos and text heavy posts--they want bite-sized content that can be quickly mentally digested to then be washed down with a $7 caramel macchiato with extra drizzle. Engaging video ads are leading social media marketing. Graphic designers must be aware of these market changes if they want to maintain a competitive edge in the workforce.

So next time you’re down on your luck, take a moment to remember the ads you’ve seen all day. Chances are, you were watching TikTok and some video ads came up when you were mindlessly scrolling. You didn’t think much of it, but remembered that one TikTok saying Starbucks’ holiday drinks came out today. And now all of the sudden you’re here: mentally digesting video content that’s being washed down with a $7 caramel macchiato with extra drizzle.
